Our iconic bar is a Hobart institution, having served the people of Battery Point for over 177 years. There’s a sense of history here that can’t be replicated. Our taps have a great range of local beers, and we also offer an extensive selection of wine, ciders and spirits. Beyond our bar you’ll find a range of dining areas, suited to every occasion. Our chefs work with only the best Tasmanian seafood and produce. When you live somewhere this special, it just makes sense.
In the heart of Shippies you’ll find Shoal, a glass-walled garden pavilion that sits beneath a stunning infinity ceiling. Here you can enjoy cocktails in front of an open fire and dine on stunningly fresh Tasmanian produce alongside an indoor rainforest (which includes a rare, beautiful Huon Pine). Bookings are essential.
Facing the well-worn cobbles of Trumpeter Street is Slip, our take on relaxed dining. Featuring locally crafted (and extremely comfortable) furniture, an open fire, gorgeous Tasmanian paintings and a menu bursting with fresh local produce, Slip is the perfect place for a casual meal with friends and family. Bookings are essential.

With its relaxed vibes, leather lounge and a fireplace built from an old ship’s boiler, it’s ideal for catching up with an old friend over a wine, or for enjoying a local whisky while you wait for your restaurant booking.
While the rest of Shippies has been carefully brought into the 21st century, not much has changed in our iconic bar. Locals have been stopping by for a cold pint and a meal for over 177 years, and we’ve preserved everything they’ve always loved about it. The memorabilia on the walls honours our nautical history, as well as the boat building and seafaring traditions of the community. With nine beer taps, a fully stocked bar, a traditional menu and a friendly atmosphere, it’s everything a great corner pub should be.
Along with Shoal and Slip, we have two fully-enclosed dining spaces available to be booked for private functions: Trim, which can seat up to 16 people (with a minimum booking of 8) and Mer, which seats up to 26 (with a minimum booking of 15). Each of them are set in rooms that were once historic cottages - you can still see where the original fireplaces were once set. And while they’re private, they’re also light and airy, and filled with personality.
We offer 2-hour sittings, but if you'd like a longer sitting earlier in the day, we can make that happen. Just let us know over email when you make your booking.
Shippies has a range of seating styles and a number of different dining areas. If you have a preference about where and how you’d like to sit, please let us know. We can’t always guarantee your first seating preference, but we'll always do our best.
While we do our best to accommodate walk-ins, we always advise to book ahead where possible. You can also have a drink in either Hold or our Bar, where you can also order from the bar menu.
